After two intense days of competition in the Mobiliar Arena in Gümligen, Hungarian Mate Tamas Koch is crowned the winner in a field of 324 participants. Giacomo Paolini (ITA) came second, with Xinkun Zhang (CHN) and Matteo Galassi (ITA) sharing third place.
The world number 3, Hungarian Mate Tamas Koch, won the 60th edition of the Bern World Cup tournament after several strong fights. In the final, he defeated the Italian Giacomo Paolini 15 to 9. The quarter-final match between Koch and Japan’s Ryu Matsumoto was won by the 25-year-old Magyare 15 to 7. In a very exciting and evenly matched semi-final match, Koch defeated Xinkun Zhang from China 15-14.
In the second semi-final, Giacomo Paolini won very clearly against his compatriot Matteo Galassi by 15 hits to 6.
Unfortunately, the four Swiss representatives all lost their matches in the tableau 64 and finished in 37th (Alexis Bayard), 44th (Ian Hauri), 59th (Clément Métrailler) and 64th (Hadrien Favre) place. The Swiss have set their goals high for tomorrow’s team competition. In the first match, the national team coached by acting president Max Heinzer will face Hong Kong, followed by the unpleasant team from Egypt.
