No competition luck for the four remaining Swiss athletes in the Berne World Cup. Alexis Bayard, Ian Hauri, Hadrien Favre and Clément Métrailler were beaten by their stronger opponents.
Hadrien Favre (left in the image, Fechtclub Bern) put in a strong performance against Olympic champion Koki Kano from Japan in the second period. In the final third period, the current world number one was able to prove his class and win the bout 15 to 11.
The reigning Swiss champion Alexis Bayard was unable to find a recipe against the Korean Ma right from the start. The athlete from Sion was able to equalize in the meantime, but immediately fell behind again.
The third in the group, Ian Hauri (SE Genève), fought successfully for large parts of his match against Ryu Matsumoto from Japan. After a short break for treatment due to a forearm injury, he was unable to find a recipe and lost 13 to 15.
Clément Métrailler, like Alexis Bayard from Sion, was unable to find a recipe against the 19-year-old American Samuel Imrek right from the start. He was led by up to four hits for the entire match and lost with a final score of 11 to 15.
After last year’s great success (1st place by Lucas Malcotti, 2nd place by Alexis Bayard), the Swiss team performed below expectations in the individual competition this year. We wish the team led by the two Valaisans every success in tomorrow’s team competition.
